To work as a paid Texas Firefighter, an individual must:
Finish a basic firefighter training regimen of 468 hours of training
Display you can perform the skills of a firefighter. This is done by having a field examiner complete a Performance Skill Verification Form
Pass the Texas State Certification Test with a minimum of a 70%
Complete a recognized Emergency Responder course
Apply for the certification and pass a criminal background check.
In addition, a Texas State Firefighter must:
Be at least 18
Have a High School diploma or its equivalent
Have the ability to communicate verbally and be able to lift, carry, drag the average human weight
Understand of interpret English
Be able to withstand varied environmental conditions
